Carl's foster parents have this to say about Carl: "Carl came to us towards the end of April 2014 with lots of medical issues. He was a stray and the vet said that he had been severely neglected. He had an exterior tumor, severe skin issues, filthy ears, gingivitis and it looked like his nails had never been clipped which made it hard for him to walk. Yet, he had such a sweet and mellow disposition that we fell in love with him from day 1!

I’m happy to report that after numerous vet visits and various rounds of medications, Carl is doing so much better. Thanks to Golden Gate Basset Rescue his tumor was successfully removed, his teeth cleaned, his nails clipped and medications paid for! Fur is now growing on places on his face, paws and stomach where there was no fur before. We thought that maybe all Bassets had black marks in the folds on their faces, but now we know that they don’t because Carl's black marks have disappeared!

We have him on a grain free dry food and raw meat diet and a neighbor contributed vitamins and a joint supplement to help Carl on his road to healing! Also, a new friend of ours is “sponsoring” Carl to get the help he needs by getting allergy testing done at a local pet dermatologist. We are so thankful for this and it should resolve his skin issues so that he no longer will need to endure his daily medicated shampoo baths and he will feel so much better!

He now loves his walks, which we give him 3 – 5 times per day!! He gets along with everyone, although at first he was a bit hesitant around men, but more recently seems to have overcome whatever fear of them that he had. He is still afraid when we water our garden, which makes us suspect that someone squirted him with a hose, which makes us very sad. He doesn’t seem to mind his daily baths - which we need to give him to keep his yeast infection in check.

Carl is affectionate and obedient. We have a basket with his toys and elk antler and when he wants to play, it’s so cute the way he goes over to his basket and picks out something to entertain himself. He hasn’t learned yet how to put his playthings away though!

We have 2 free range chickens that are always roaming about the yard, and Carl has never barked or chased them! In fact, they are the “alpha” animals in our household as they help themselves to Carl's food as he is trying to eat. (We pretty quickly stopped feeding him in the backyard so that he could enjoy all his food in peace!)"
