Well, this is an adorable tri-colored basset babe if there ever was one! Harlequin (Harli for short) was an owner surrender. Her adoring papa lost his dog-friendly rental and, with great pain, surrendered Harli to GGBR. She is just under 3 years old and is AKC registered. She is currently on a weight loss plan which will need to be continued, overweight bassets are a recipe for spinal and joint issues. She has been vet-checked and is spayed.
Other than her weight Harli is in very good physical condition. Her foster mom has been feeding her a combination of salmon/potato and lamb meal/potato kibble. She prefers human food, which she is not given now and is not a good idea because that’s what put the xtra pounds on her in the first place. She was probably close to 65 pounds when she came into GGBR and struggled to move. Harli has been in foster care since 6/28. She was very miserable the first week as she
missed her Dad so much. However, she is very flexible and is totally housebroken. She
was living in an apartment situation and told her Dad when she needed to go out by
putting her paws up on the bed. She would likely revert to the same behavior in a non doggie door home (so she’s a good candidate for an apartment). Now, she has a dog door and 24/7 access to a large backyard, so she takes care of herself. Her foster mom's rescue beagle Claire showed her the ropes and they get a long very well. We would reccommend introducing her carefully to any other dogs, but think she’ll do well. We don't know about cats.
Harli is very mellow, a lower-energy basset. She is very sweet, even tempered and has clearly never been mistreated a minute in her life. Her greatest trauma has been losing her Daddy. Harli LIKES TO EAT like any hound. She likes her food, your food, any food. If not watched, she will eat her foster sisters food AND her food. However, she is NOT a “counter cruiser”. She has never exhibited any interest in anything on a counter. If it’s on the floor, its fair game!
