Learn more about the Basset Hound. Excellent Field Trials/Tracking Candidate - Hunter needs a dog-savvy home that can give him the firm leadership he needs
Hunter is a two year old, AKC Registered, male who is more than ready for his own forever home. He needs an adoptive family that is 'dog-savvy', not for an inexperienced home... he has been in a residential training program for the last few weeks and comes with a Behavior Management Plan and therefore some good manners! We can share that plan with prospective adopters - just ask!
In particular, Hunter would be best placed in a home that is willing to WORK him... tracking, field trials, agility... and who would be prepared to make sure he gets at least one worthwhile walk a day, more if possible. Hunter has a tendency to nervousness unless his life is structured and busy. Preferably his new home will not leave him on his own for too long... either you are at home, work at home, can call home often, take him with you to work, or send him to a doggy day care. Hunter is still a cuddle-bug, who loves, loves, loves people. However, he needs to be in a home that does not expect to share their bed or couch with him, unless he is specifically invited to join you. He wants to be dominant, and he can't be... you have to be. He is a large hound, and because of his age, would not do well in a home with children under the age of 14. All members of the household will need to be on board with his training plan as he can quickly think he is in charge and adopt an 'attitude' (bassetude). Hunter is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and ready to go home with you! He is currently living in the household of his trainer near Sacramento and the ideal home would live in that locality and be willing to continue taking him to his trainer for follow up sessions, which GGBR will pay for. If you are not close to Sacramento, you should be prepared to enroll him in a local group training session, not because he especially needs the training, but because you would both benefit from the bonding experience and this will continue to give Hunter the confidence he needs. Are you the right home for this handsome hunk of hound? This is a REAL dog that will reward you with a lifetime of fun and loyalty given half a chance!
