Duke is a vey happy and energetic basset, estimated 3 1/2 years old. His tail never seems to stop wagging (which means anything on tail level is subject to being knocked over so be careful!). He does have some wonky front legs which make him walk in a clumsy manner but he doesn’t let that slow him down. He sleeps well in a crate at night and does well in a crate in the car. He gets along very well with other dogs and particularly loves his foster sister who is close in age to him. He would be very happy in a home with another youngish dog. He does beautifully at the dog park where he seems to get along with everyone and every dog.

He does have a little separation anxiety when left alone (he barks) but seems to do fine when other dogs are present. He really does well walking on a leash except for the occasional stubborn moment when he insists on resting for a few minutes.

He can do “sit” and “down” and we’re working on “off” because he has a tendency to jump up on people and furniture. Warning- this makes him an excellent counter surfer! He is not a resource guarder but will happily steal food and treats whenever he can so you need to keep an eye on him. He is very mindful when you tell him no.

Duke will need some potty training diligence. I believe he was house trained at one point but has backslid a little. He is quite good when left alone but needs to be accompanied and encouraged to go potty outside when there are people around. I think he simply doesn’t like to be out of sight of his people. He can use a doggy door but his legs make it difficult to use so he would prefer not to.

I call him the happy oaf because he’s always throwing himself into the center of the attention pile in rather goofy ways. He wants your love! This is a handsome, sweet boy who deserves a wonderful home!
